    Hi all!
I was trying to make caramel corn ice cream the other day until I realized I was out of rock salt; then I realized you can't make ice cream without it. Where can this stuff be found? I bought it once at Target with an ice cream maker but according to their website they don't have it. Please help! My base is just sitting in my fridge and has been since Sunday, so i don't know how long it will last in there.

    Thanks!

    Pie,

I'm guessing rock salt is hiding in plain sight from upscale cooking stores to big box groceries, though I understand your frustration.

For a sure thing Sur la table on North has rock salt in stock.

Here's a past thread with mentions of rock salt.

    Enjoy,

Look for the salt used for melting ice on your sidewalk. There are at least a few versions on the shelf that also list themselves as "ice cream salt". Saw this on the shelf at Strack and Van Til yesterday - 10 and 25 lb bags.

My local Jewel carries Morton Rock Salt off and on but mostly seasonally. Look for a red labeled Morton box. It would be worth calling around to a bunch of Jewel and Dominicks stores. At my Jewel, it is on the shelf next to the pickling salt (green label) and large boxes of table salt (blue label). Look waaaay down on the bottom shelf.

I've purchased bags labeled for ice cream and found them to contain gravel bits. Since the salt doesn't come in contact with your ice cream mix, you could use snow melting salt but be certain it is just salt.

Perhaps too late, but I just saw rock salt at the Treasure Island on Broadway. In the middle aisle with all the "premium" products...
