OK, so all three of our little ones (1,3,5) love Gyros....We ahve decided that we are going to have Gyros for the baby's first birthday. We live out in the Western Burbs and was looking for a place either in the Western Burbs of the west loop are that we could get fresh pita and good gyros that we can prepare at home.

We usually buy the Gyros from Michael's in Aurora/Naperville, but was wondering if there was a better source out there. Also, the pita that they had available were not the best, we are looking for a bakery that possibly produces them on site.

I did some searching and found minimal results. Can anyone help out with this one?

    Thanks.

Can you be more specific about what area and how far you're willing to drive? Pita Inn springs to mind, but I don't know if any of the locations are near enough.

    I'm fond of:

    Gyros Express, Ltd
750 N Addison Rd, Villa Park, IL
    Tel: (630) 530-4433

In the summer, they grow tomatoes in all the planter boxes around the building.

We live in Naperville and am willing to drive 30 minutes. I work just outside the city loimits off of the Eisenhower and can drive into the city if need be. I am looking for a place that I can buy the meat and pita and prepare at home.

    THanks.

Not to prepare and eat at home, but if I were you, I'd go to West Side Gyros in Aurora for take-out. It's on west Illinois Ave, and they are darned good. Also, the best french fries in town.

The easiest way to go would be New York Street west to Lake Street (Rte 31), then take a right (north) onto Lake. Go to Illinois, and turn left. It will be down a few blocks on your left (just past a Dairy Queen).

I don't have a suggestion, but I just wanted to say that's amazing that you have a one year old that will eat gyros. Go, daddy, go! And Mama too!
I can't believe I ate the whole thing!

Our favorite gyros place is the Gyros King on the southeast corner of Ogden Avenue and Main Street in Downers Grove. I'm sure they will carve and sell gyros in bulk; don't know about pita, but I'm sure you could work something out.

I would make my own tzatsiki; the commercial stuff never has enough garlic for me, and it's usually a little skimpy on the take-out sandwich. Also I like more onions than they usually provide. For all that, their gyros sandwich is the best I've had around the western suburbs.

Interesting note: in Chicago, it's pronounced HEE-ros, but in Pittsburgh, it's called GUY-rose (hard G.) No idea why the difference.

In the Greek language, there is no word "Greek." They are "Hellenes."

I've always heard it pronounced yee-ros in Chicago.

Knock your socks off.. Pita Inn is great, but not really gyros - it's beef shawarma.

Holy Cow, Diannie! I was raised on Gyros Express. I'm thrilled to hear they're still pleasing. The pork souvlaki was particularly excellent.
