I was watching Jamie Oliver, Egg show and he was talking about eating egg crumpets and bacon with brown sauce or maple syrup. Does anyone know what brown sauce is?

I find that I have to google often when following Olivers recipes. This was no exception:

Sounds like a cross between barbeque sauce and A-1.

The most famous brand of brown sauce is HP. I love it! I usually eat it with french fries (or as the brits say, chips) and onion rings. It's tangy and just a tad sweet. Will's description is pretty dead on. It's pretty easy to find in British sections of grocery stores. I think I picked my most recent bottle at World Market.

HP is the standard (there are several varieties, including the famous "Fruity!"). My favorite used to be Lea and Perrins 'Tangy Brown' and Heinz Yorkshire Brown, but since Heinz acquired HP and shipped production off-island, they don't make either anymore, and I think there is a noticeable difference in HP now.

    I do really like Branston's:

Harder to get here. One of the few brands not now owned by Heinz.
