My mom loves those individually wrapped blue mints that are cube shaped. They are a clearish hard candy. These days, they seem to be getting harder and harder to find. Her typical source has been the Door County Confectionery at Randhurst in Mt. Prospect. However, last time she was there, the mints looked stale and started to turn color. The last time I bought them was from the candy shop at Lexington Market in Baltimore. Does anyone know what mints I'm referring to? I tried googling a picture, but no luck. Where can I get these mints in the Chicagoland area? Thanks.

I have purchased blue block-shaped mints in a clear wrapper at Caputo's on Harlem, but I'm almost positive they're of Italian origin, which may not be the ones you're seeking. Still, I like 'em.

I could swear that Brach's made blue mints, and they're found at Jewel in the open bins. But they're round, not square. You used to be able to get a sample for a dime, if you want to check them out first.

I think I buy the same ones Hammond is referring to at Valli Produce in Arlington Heights. You can buy them by weight. They're lovely lollies that I sometimes contribute to our office candy bowl. I've also found eastern European versions of this candy at Shop 'n Save in Des Plaines and, I think, also at Market Place on Oakton in Skokie. These other versions are equally delightful.

In the city, Fox & Obel carries my favorite French version of the blue mint. I always forget who produces these candies, but they come in a skinny jam-like jar with no label (the label is on the paper that covers the lid). At Fox & Obel, as of Friday night, they were keeping these candies on the same table with Easter sweets, not far from the glass case with chocolate truffles. Is it obvious that I'm a sugar fiend?
