Looking for good stuff, fresh (less than 1 year old). Any ideas? I'm not much of an afficianado so I don't know the different types, but just something good, no stems.

I'm not certain, but I would try Golden Pacific. They've got a pretty fair selection of teas, both black and green (I think).

Yes -- Ten Ren is very good. High quality teas, and it's virtually a destination store, so stuff turns over quickly.

I second that. If you're looking for "really good stuff," this is the place. They have an online store, too.

I was just in Chinatown on Friday, and bought some green tea. I got some from one of the stores where they have big glass jars of everything. I was told this was a premium grade. The leaves looked like little cigars all tightly rolled up. They unfold nicely when you steep them in hot water. Tea tasted pretty good. $9.89/for 2 oz.

I've heard this type referred to as "performance tea," because it performs when you put it in hot water.

Coffee & Tea Exchange in East Lakeview (3300 N. Broadway) has a pretty good and varied tea selection. I get a great Japanese Cherry Green Tea there, as well as excellent black teas in the traditional British mold.

Ten Ren is now closed in Chinatown.

For a daily pot, I think the jasmine tea in the square yellow tins that you see at almost every Asian grocery store is pretty good. It doesn't say "green tea" on the tin, but it's green. Don't steep it very long. It's quicker to get oversteeped and bitter than most teas. It perfumes the room very nicely, too.
