I'm hosting a party to watch a boxing match next weekend between a Mexican-American and a Filipino boxer. I'd like to have Mexican and Filipino food for the guests but
I'm a little short on time since I have to work until a couple hours before the fight starts. Anyone have any good ideas for Mexican/Filipino places near Albany Park that have good, relatively inexpensive take-out that would hold up to reheating?
    Thanks,
    Becca

There might be some dishes that are similar in both cultures (primarily because Spain visited both regions), like carnitas, which are relatively inexpensive. You could serve carnitas in tacos to represent Mexico, and have carnitas (maybe with a little added adobo seasoning) on rice for Filipino. Simple, cheap, crowd pleasing.

Look up Ruby's Fast Food (3740 W Montrose Ave) for Filipino food. They do a brisk catering business and are well respected in the community.
The following foods should be instantly familiar to everyone due to Spanish influence:
    Lechon (Kawali), or anything pork.
Menudo - will be good reheated
    Empanadas
    Rellenos
    Escabeche

    Becca,

3R's has a lengthy steam table setup perfect for take away, there are tables for dine in as well. I've only been a few times, but liked most everything I've tried.

An option for Mexican take away is Cermak, nice size grocery with a Hispanic bent and a substantial prepared foods section.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

For Filipino food, my vote is for Little Quiapo simply for the variety of food they offer (and it's pretty dang good too). And the place is always packed to the gills with regulars, so they must be doing something right. As this is primarily a buffet, I'd give them a call to make sure they have carryout covered.

To get on your Filipino guests good sides, I'd suggest a stew (kaldareta / mechado - beef & potatoes in tomato sauce, kare-kare - oxtail in peanut sauce), an oily dish (lechon - see above, lumpiang shanghai - mini pork eggrolls), and plenty of white rice.

Of course the last time I went to a largely Filipino / Mexican party to watch Pacquiao / Morales, our hosts went the neutral route and got Korean. Haha

Roast a pig and you'll have both sides covered! Don't forget the liver sauce. Chicharrones, peanuts, and San Miguel beer, too.

M-3 is a homey Filipino takeout spot almost directly across from the Cermak grocery store, which has a large selection of Mexican carryout dishes.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Inspired by the LTH potluck, I'm going to make Cochinita Pibil and pick up appetizers at 3R (it's right near my house so I figured it's worth checking out). I'll post on the results.
