The Costco in Lombard, which I don't often visit, had hundreds of Four Ounce jars of "oscetra", I believe, caviar at something like $55 each.
I tried to get a good look at the eggs, but the jar is encased in plastic packaging like a kid's toy or something from Radio Shack. Looked a little cloudy, with some smooshed stuff, but generally pretty good looking in terms of color and size, and obviously dirt cheap.
My main problem is the label: contents are simple enough, sturgeon roe and salt, but the origin is listed as Caspian Sea/Black Sea/USA. Hey, any of the above can be great and well worth it, but the packaging makes me wonder if there isn't some string of strugeon mills in the Crimea, Kazakhstan and Mississippi squeezing the aged critters and sending everything to the processing plant in Kirkland. It would help me make future caviar decisions if I knew what I was eating, also.
I like to give my modest holiday caviar dollars to locals like Collins Caviar, but this might be too good to pass up. Any experiences out there?
