I've never heard of this gadget, and just got an email for it on sale. Web site says its available at Home Depot, Bass Pro, Ace and other retailers. Very strange gimmick; says it's a combination "convection, steam and smoke cooker" yet as far as I can tell it's simply using hot air to produce flavorless meats (they call it 'barbecue' on one side of their mouths and then talk about 'speed' out of the other.) Charcoal goes on the outside and in the top thingamajig, so the meat is completely sealed from the flame. Anyone seen one of these, or tasted a finished product? (If you watch the video on their site, the turkey doesn't look good at all.)

It looks like a poor man's La Caga China.

The La Caja China actually works very well. But, I'd like to figure out how to get a little smoke in there.

This Orion contraption really reminds me of an old cast iron dutch oven with feet. Toss in whatever crossed your path that day and stick it in pot. Shove it in the coals. Supper.
Except that the Orion probably doesn't work as well.

It looks, basically, like what I do with our camping cookset when I'm trying to bake - it's a glorified camp oven. While you probably won't get results like a smoker, I've found that smoke tends to penetrate my baking a little on an open fire (as well as my hair and clothes.) So you're getting similar results to a high-roast in an oven, with a little bit of smokiness and temperature variability. I can't imagine throwing down the cash they're asking for this thing; lukewarm review here.

No traffic here for four years, yikes! Brother-in-law's b-day coming up and I've been looking around. I'd never heard of this thing before but it seems to get some awfully positive feedback. He's not a serious, totally dedicated outdoor cooker and this looks like it has the advantage of not requiring that. Plus, although I wouldn't necessarily swear by Amazon.com feedback for most things, my sense is that this is something where the voice of the people would probably accurately reflect his overall level of happiness. All that said, do people here have much experience with the "Orion 101 Convection Cooker"?
