I tried out a quart of frozen chicken stock from Jerry and John's Butcher shop last night. Jerry and John's is kind of the successor shop to the very popular, but now closed, E&M Provisions. The stock is branded "From Caroline's Kitchen", Caroline being the wife, or sister-in-law, or some kind of relation of Jerry, or John or somebody who works there.
Anyway, the upshot is that it made a darn good broccoli soup, and I'll be buying this again when I don't have the time or inclination to make my own stock. I'd say it was a bit on the salty side, as I didn't add any salt to the soup, other than the 50 shakes of Tabasco I put in my own bowl, and it was just about right. $4.00 for a quart, which is probably cheaper than for what I could make it.
So, if you're in the neighborhood of Dempster, four or five blocks west of McKormick, on the North side of the street, in Skokie, IL, give it a shot. It's a lot better than a stick in the eye.
