I'm not sure how recent of a trend this is, but just over the weekend I noticed three different grocery stores selling fresh made potato chips in the deli section. While I did not try them, Michaels in Naperville allows you to specify the finished flavor. The ones I tried were from Inboden's Meat Market in Dekalb and were quite good; thick cut and tannish brown, definitely not golden they were well salted and tasted of potato and fresh oil. The other place I spotted fresh fried chips was at Schnucks grocery store in Dekalb, which is a grocery chain out of St. Louis.

Has anyone else noticed fresh fried chips at grocery store deli counters or have any favorites to recommend?

I did not know that Schnuck's had a DeKalb outlet. Sounds like time for a roadtrip. (For the record, they also own Logli's in Rockford and Janesville.

Schnucks was pretty nice, though I don't think it's a destination store like Inbodens Meats. I was surprised to find some nice country ham steaks and half shank portions from Burger's Smokehouse. Schnucks also had some really cheap house brand smoked turkey legs for like $1.60 for 2. I also spotted a nice collection of various salts (pink, black, grey) at one end of the deli counter and they had a surprisingly good selection of citrus including blood oranges and some odd looking greenish yellow grapefruit whose name begins with an O.

Kroger has started selling them here in Indiana- and you know what? they're pretty darn good. total taste of potato and salt, with no additive flavor at all.
is making all his reservations under the name Steve Plotnicki from now on.
