Browsing around the Fresh Market store in Geneva yesterday I was surprised to find a few packages of Nathan's Famous natural casing dogs. The skinless are pretty easy to find, but skinless hot dogs are akin to stale chips or microwaved bread; the flavor is still there, but the key texture is gone. I've not seen these offered before so figured I'd try a package. I fried a few up in a pan with a little oil to ensure browning and went with a minimalist topping of plain yellow mustard. The hot dogs were good with a nice snap and traditional all beef hotdog flavor, but they didn't surpass Vienna, Bobaks or Usingers natural casings dogs from a flavor perspective. I understand there is something lost in eating a pan fried hot dog at home compared to how it should be served natively in a proper stand with a steamed bun and standard toppings. At $4.50 for a pack of 6 it was a pretty good deal and I'll happily eat the rest, but I wouldn't drive out of my way for them like I would to get to the Vienna factory store. Maybe for those who grew up eating them in the east it might be a nice treat?
