I was actually very impressed with eatchicago's list, it even included farmers markets out near where I live(Marseilles, Yorkville, and Ottawa) which is appreciated. I knew about the Marseilles, and Ottawa ones, the Yorkville one was news to me. thanks.

FYI, it's not just a list, but also a search tool where you can enter in a zip code (and a date) and see all the markets on a map, color-coded by how soon they're open.

yes, The Local Beet market locator is really terrific. I was taking a drive from Chicago to the way-north burbs, and was able to zoom out on the map to see all of the markets that would be open on my route to/from the client.

According to the tech whiz behind the Local Beet's market locator, Joe G, if you continue to zoom out, you might find a few markets well beyond the Chicago area.

On the other hand, through the hard work of, what do we call Jill M now, Cookie or Petis Pois, there are markets in the locator from NW Indiana, Wisconsin, even Michigan, so let the locator guide your summer trips.

Some of us search by day of the week, not by zip code, so I think both the list and the map have value. I find the day of the week on the list, then enter the zip code in the map and find out where the place is, and if it's a reasonable distance. Perfect combination -- at least for someone like me, where the day is often my priority search criterion.

You can always just enter your zip code and any day in the future that is the day of the week you care about. Then, zoom out. Green markers will show you who is open on that day.

That's cool. Especially now that I've seen that they're not all on Saturday or Sunday morning.

Glad to see, however, that you also list all the markets -- for those of us who like to print lists to help us as we meander -- probably mostly those of us who don't have iPods or other cool gadgets, and can't access your map while we're driving.

I noted a few markets open in the afternoon/evening today.

Having just sent all my money to the government (quarterly estimated taxes), I needed comfort. My local farmers market is not open yet, so I did a quick search on the spiffy Local Beet search site and found a market (Palatine) that was already open and was not vastly farther than my regular market. I love the "market today," "market within three days," feature, as I actually searched a couple of days ago.

So my kitchen is now full of bags, and my purse is full of business cards, and I'm definitely comforted.

So thanks for the splendid tool, Local Beet.

Andersonville Farmers Market

This one has been just blowing up. Each week there are more venders. We went the first week and there were just a few (and they were almost all sold out by the time I got off work) - now it's almost the whole street between Clark and Ashland and TONS of venders.

So awesome

Anybody know of a really great one on the south side that takes place on Saturday or Sunday? I was all jazzed about Hyde Park, but that's Thursday.

The Lincoln Square Farmers' Market has been extended to Tuesday, November 24. I do not know how many growers will stick it out to the end, though. Publicity for the extension was poor--alderman's weekly e-mail newsletter and sheets at the last scheduled market. Yesterday one grower told me that business was not very good, which was consistent with what I saw.

Mick Klug and Seedlings were there yesterday along with two of the three larger vegetable growers as well as the fruit-veg combo Compean and Sons (Huntington Orchards prior to a bankruptcy reorg). Bakeries, mushroom grower and meat grower were there. There are increasing produce supply issues as most growers do not have a lot left. However, winter squash were plentiful at lower prices than the week before. Dotson had boxes and half bushels for $6.

I just spent some time with the Local Beet's market map (what a great resource! Thank you!), but I'm wondering if there are any winter markets in the Chicago area... I see this post about the Lincoln Square extension, but what I'm looking for is probably more of an indoor, all-year event, and most of what I'm finding on the map have already closed down. I just moved here, and I feel like I've missed out on all the fun!

This time of year, usually on Fridays, the Local Beet has a post covering upcoming winter markets and the lot. Last week's "Local Calendar" covered a lot of forthcoming markets.

couple dates that the Logan Square Market will not be open:

The Logan Square Indoor Winter Market takes place on Sundays from 10am - 2pm in lobby of the Congress Theater, 2135 N. Milwaukee Ave. The Market will run from November 1 thru March 28. There will not be a market on Nov. 27, Dec. 27 & Jan. 3.

last week, from what i gather (did not attend week 1), had about 10-12 vendors, actually more like 16: "Here is a list of vendors who will be at the indoor winter market this Sunday Golden Rise bakery, Mike & Clare's, River Valley, Mint Creek, Earth First Farms,Tomato Mountain, Jake's Country Meats, Tempel Farms, Lyons Fruit Farm, Cook Au Vin, Brunkow Cheese Tiny Greens, Zullo's Bakery, Floriole, Dennanne Farms (honey), Herbally Yours (herbal vinegars)".

Plus there is The Chicago French Market coming. . . .for new winter shopping.
