It's my goal to go to at least one different Farmer's Market every week, and the last weekend in May I was excited to find that there would be one in Norwood Park, a stone's throw from my place, at the Century 21 at Northwest Highway and Harlem. I walked there and back with my little old lady cart in tow. It was an incredibly disappointing sight, and I was in and out in about 10 minutes; the entire trip took less than an hour.
The term Farmer's Market was laughable, unless there are people growing Pampered Chef and Mary Kay ladies somewhere. The only things that could pass as "fresh vegetables" were in the form of potted plants and seedlings. There were two bakers, I believe, one with quite lovely decorated cookies (like those you might see at Cookies by Design, but smaller), and another with stuff so unappetizing I wouldn't think of paying the inflated price: it was the yeast coffee cake ring covered in totally melted, soggy glaze that turned me off the most. There were about four people from neighborhood thrift shops, selling tables of odds and ends and sack towels. About 12 or so tables total and a balloon jump for the kiddies, or whatever those things are called.
This market only operates the last Saturday of every month from May through September, which makes me wonder why they bother. I'm heading to Park Ridge tomorrow, Pilsen next Sunday, and I can't wait to see what Logan Square has in store for us this year, not to mention Evanston's 2-for-1.
