I recently bought Fuchsia Dunlop's Land of Plenty (Sichuan) and Revolutionary Chinese Cooking (Hunanese). I'm looking for one of the two kinds of dried chilies that she recommends in her book. Either facing heaven peppers (cháo tiān jiāo 朝天椒) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facing_heaven_pepper) or seven star peppers (qi xing jiao). The former apparently is hard to get in the states, and I can't really find information on the latter.

I've toured all of the asian markets I know of (in chinatown: chinatown market, and all of the dried food stores in the strip mall, the only exception here is richwell market on Argyle: viet hoa, broadway supermarket, golden pacific market, as well as a couple of small markets on argyle) with absolutely no luck. All I find are the small super hot chillies that are either thai, or the tien tsien type that spice house sells (http://www.thespicehouse.com/spices/tien-tsin-chinese-chile-pepper) which are way too hot, and don't have the right flavor (according to Dunlop).

Does anyone have a source for getting either facing heaven or seven star chillies, in Chicago, or by mail order?
