I like to try to expose my kids to as wide an array of food as I can. I figure if they at least try it they’re expanding their minds as well as their pallets. For example Sunday we had grilled oysters as part of our dinner. They LOVED them.
So on the fifth of this month I figured it was a perfect excuse to take a little culinary license and try some faux Mexican food. I would prefer to do it authentic but I’m just not that good a cook so I gave it my limited best.
I fixed up some shredded beef with black beans, sweet corn, chopped tomato and green pepper with some taco mix powder (hey I told you at the start this wasn’t authentic) in a somewhat southwestern fashion.
I shredded some lettuce and picked up queso fresco, soft flour tortillas and crema from the local Mexican grocery and I thought it all looked yummy. Time for dinner.
So I called the kids in from the back yard to wash up and excitedly told them we were having tacos! I proudly set out the food on the table expecting oohs and ahhs but all I got were raised eyebrows and blank stares.
One of my little ones asked “what dis?!”
“Tacos!” I replied
After a moment the other little angel exclaimed “DIS not TAKO!”…
And they both made a gesture with their hands to demonstrate…
“Tako like DIS!”

And then it hit me…
Taco (not mine):

My Japanese wife found this very funny.
