Chicken Saddle Legs at Mexican market - what are they?

Carniceria Jimenez has chicken saddle legs on sale for 69 cents a pound this week.

They're called piernas de pollo con cadera in spanish.

I went to the one in Hanover Park, and I'm guessing they didn't get their stock in or something, and I ended up getting chicken drumsticks for that price.

I would have thought they'd be leg/thigh quarters - that was pictured in their ad. I figured drumsticks weren't that bad a deal with not having that backbone to pay for. Also it seems to me that drumsticks and thighs go for the same price anyway, though I never really understood that with thighs seeming meatier.

Well, I'd just like to know for future reference if they SHOULD have been leg/thigh quarters. Frankly, I shopped on the first day of the sale, so maybe if I went back later in the week I'd get the quarters....

In addition to leg and thigh, this cut include a section of the back. I consider this a bonus, because there is an oyster (an oval cut of meat, very tender), often the tail and extra skin.

Piernas de pollo con cadera means chicken legs and hips. I have never seen legs/thigh quarters sold with part of the back, though maybe they are in some places.

Chicken leg/thigh QUARTERS always come with a bit of the back.

It is the part Cathy is talking about with the oyster.

The thigh really just has one long bone - when you get quarters (it's a quarter of the whole chicken) you get some backbone too, not a lot.

You probably always saw it there but didn't realize it's a part of the back.

Yeah, you are right. I guess I was thinking that Cathy meant a larger piece of the back than that little bit attached to the end of the thigh.

I have seen TURKEY saddles at Woodman's. They are the whole turkey with the breast removed. Great for soups and chicken stews.
