A former student of mine just moaned that Paulina's wanted $9/lb for short ribs. Where else might he try, seeking a better buy?

    TIA!

If they don't care about bone in Costco has decent short ribs. I've also had good luck with ones from Chicago Meat Market at 3021 N Cicero Ave. Butcher & Larder has great ones as well, that might be less than $9/lb. He could also just go there and ask Rob for a suggestion for another cut to use for the dish and I'm sure he'd get something of great quality for less than $9/lb.

If you want the Asian style cut, you can generally get them at Super H mart for under $3/lb. By Asian stle, I mean cut accross the bone 1/2-3/4" thick.

I've found Peoria's to be overly fatty.

Was just at Fresh Farms in Niles and they have some nice looking ones for 3.49/lb this week...reg price is 3.99 (I think).

Caputo's, last batch I bought were @ $2.99/lb. I rely on Caputo's to be one of my go to sources for affordable beef.

I just stopped in to Westbrook Market in Downers Grove to have a look around and they had some small, but very nice looking shortribs on sale for under $3/lb.

Dusting off this old thread to see if there are any new suggestions to buy short ribs on the north side without breaking the bank. Looking to do a braise tomorrow.

If you don't mind boneless, Costco usually has them... Also Super H-Mart in Niles, bone-in or out, thin or thick cuts, fresh and frozen :-)

I've noticed them from time to time at Mariano's. I haven't bought them there so I can't vouch for the quality.

I'll be smoking some tomorrow, as it will be clear and warm for November, and we have some out-of-town guests. I picked mine up today at Park Packing on 41st and Ashland--it's akin to Peoria, as you walk into a big cold room and put on disposable gloves to dump piles of meat into bags, though somehow it's a bit less nice than Peoria, which I sorta like. They had chuck and plate short ribs underneath the briskets, not at all labeled, and cheap at only 2.69 a pound. They come in large cryovac packages of about five ribs each, but if you ask, they'll cut those open and give you as much as you like.
