I began the 3-4 day process of making Rye Bread with Flax Seed and Sunflower Seeds today. (From "The Nordic Diet" by Trina Hahnemann.) On Sunday, I will need some cracked whole rye. Came up empty at Jewel (thought they may have a Bob's Red Mill product as they do carry a fairly good amount of the line,) and Family Fruit Market today.

I'll be out and about the North Side tomorrow & will give Whole Foods a try as I'm going to be there anyway, but was wondering if anyone here has ever tried cracking their own from whole rye berries, just in case I can't find the cracked easily? If so, spice grinder in small batches? Food processor?

    I'll need 11oz for 2 loaves.

    Thanks,
    Lynn

    Lynn,

I'd also check out Fresh Farms on Touhy. They've got quite the collection of stuff like this.

Thanks for the rec, Steve. Can't believe I'd never been in there before - wow. However, no cracked or whole rye. Was in a Treasure Island today too, but no luck. I really didn't think it would be this difficult to find locally.

We didn't make it to WF as planned today, but are attending Armenian Fest in Evanston tomorrow so will stop in the WF there as a last resort.

Otherwise, will have to sub cracked wheat.... :(

Note to self - have mis en place on hand before embarking on major bread project.

Was able to find whole rye berries at WF Evanston. Attempt at cracking in mortar & pestle resulted in flying rye berries all over my kitchen. After some "googling," followed someone else's path and froze them for an hour then processed in small batches in my spice grinder. This resulted in a counter full of rye dust and pretty unevenly cracked rye.

Not feeling great about this, but pressing on. We'll see what this looks like in 18 hours...

I came here tonight to ask this question and discovered I’d already asked it 7 years ago. :D It’s odd to me how elusive this item is. Not currently available via Amazon. I went up and down every isle in Fresh Farms today and came up empty.

I wound up ordering some online from a Mill and paying shipping.

If anyone does know of a local source please advise for my future reference!
