Today, a client brought me a new seasonal offering from the Swedish Bakery in Andersonville. It was a sort of plum crumble with a dough base covered in fresh plums and topped with a crunchy "crumble". It just went on sale today for a limited time, and was absolutely delicious. The juicy tart plums contrasted perfectly with the mildly sweet crunchy topping. The pastry reminded me of a Russian dessert my mom would make this time of year, when ripe plums become available. So if you like plums and are in the hood, stop by and pick some up while it lasts. If you are a fan of plums, it is definitely worth the stop.

A similar confection appears every year at this time at Schlegl's Bakery in Lincolnwood. I look forward to it every year.

Every year at Rosh Hashanah, my grandmother made a spectacular plum tart on a muerbeteig base. She served it with plenty of whipped cream. I remember it with great fondness and have baked a close version myself for a number of years. Not as good as Grandma's, though. These sound similar but with a crumble top, which I also have done on occasion. It means Fall is here to me.

Actually, the Schlegl's version has a lattice top. (that's why I said it's similar to the Sweedish Bakery Version.)

I will have to try Schlegl's version. It sounds good. I forgot how much I like plum pastries. It does remind me of starting the new school year with a piece of Mom's plum tart wrapped up in my lunch-box.

    HI,

I might just bring my family's plum cake to the picnic. I made two last weekend for a picnic and garden party. They were gobbled up fast.

    Regards,
