Does anybody have a recommendation for a decent wine shop within walking distance or a short cab ride from downtown? I will be staying at the Conrad next weekend and need wine for dinner at Goosefoot.
    thank you!

Pastoral has a nice selection and is right at Lake and Michigan.

While it may sound like a joke, there is a Walgreens at the corner of State and Randolph that has a decent booze selection (liquor, wine, and beer). This particular store is their attempt to go a little upmarket.

Does it have to be downtown? I live in between Goosefoot and Fine Wine Brokers and that's where I would recommend you go. Fine Wine Brokers is very close to Goosefoot (less than 5 minutes by car, 10 or so minutes walking, and close to the Western El station), and they are excellent. Also, they tend to keep up with the local byo restaurants and I suspect they have already provided great help to many people dining at Goosefoot (they helped me). They have a terrific selection of wines, including some already chilled.

If you are taking a taxi to the restaurant, you could always call FWB in advance to arrange for the wines to be pre-selected (with some guidance) so that you don't need to keep your cab waiting too long.

The widest selection (and generally the best prices) in the area will be found at Binny's, about half a mile west on Grand. If you find yourself around Navy Pier (and with any luck you can avoid that), Fox & Obel, a fancy grocery store about half a mile east on Illinois, might be worth a look. Pastoral, about half a mile south, is a nice shop with a small but well-chosen selection. Good cheese and sandwiches too.

On the higher end you could check out the inventory of these two rare & fine wine internet shops both located in Chicago. Pick up or delivery downtown should not be a major issue for either.
Both should have a selection of vintage champ. And burgs both white and red that will pair nicely with the current menu at Goosefoot.

Second that. In fact, that Walgreen's has a very good selection of wines and spirits. Personally I think that when a big chain like that experiments with providing quality products they deserve our support.

Is The Artisan Wine Cellar still open in the Mart? They have a carefully curated selection. I don't drink California wines and I could always find a few interesting bottles to buy.
