While researching the Hua Jiao spice (Sze Chuan peppercorn), I stumbled across a fantastic website which I have spent many hours perusing. An Austrian gentleman has taken a list of 117 spices, translated the names into 60 languages including vernacular and scientific names, yielding a cross-referenced table of 10500 different names. He then thoroughly researched and documented the historical, scientific and cultural aspects of each plant. It is absolutely intriguing. Aside from revealing interesting facts about familiar spices, the site has introduced me to several spices that I have never heard of, but with which I intend to experiment.
