A spice shop has opened in Highland Park, but the store is somewhat difficult to find. They're located at 474 Central and not at steet level. They are downstairs of the Los Palmas Restaurant. I had to ask more than one shop owner about their location. The store has been opened only a few weeks, but it's an interesting place.

The owner, Marlena, is quite knowledgeable and friendly. They started as a mail order Internet business and decided to try a brick and mortar location. The shop has a nice selection of spices and she'll custom blend anything you want.

I bought a couple of house blends and she gave me samples too.

With all of the retails shops and restaurants closing in HP, it would be nice if this one makes.

Wow, this is a tough market to crack. I will certainly check it out. I always keep a Spice House list going, and since I only go there every couple of months, geography isn't that big of a deal.

    Hi,

I stopped in on their second day. The owner was busy with customers. I did a walk through with plans to return sometime.

What surprised me was how relatively little stock they have. Spices were in jars ready to be measured out sitting on wall mounted shelves. At the time of this visit, there were no prices visible for these herbs and spices. There were a few laminated information sheets on the health benefits of various herbs and spices.

Since this is only a few blocks walk from home, I will certainly given them a shot. Their location is a challenge, because they are practically invisible.

    Regards,

I went in today. As stated above, there is a more limited selection of spices than someplace like the Spice House. However, they seem to be of good quality. The proprietress and her husband are from Sri Lanka. They buy all their spices from Sri Lanka. She is really pushing her custom 'healthy' blends of spices. I am happy this store is in HP and I will give her some business.

It might be interesting if she could supply some Sri Lanken recipes and the spices necessary to prepare them.
