I am looking for a recommend place where I can get a small quantity of latkes to go. I searched through a few threads, but haven't found any clear cut answers, so I was hoping for some suggestions.

I only need a small quantity, less than a dozen. I will be traveling from Logan Square up to Libertyville, so I am willing to stop anywhere in between those points, and I am also willing to go a little out of my way.

I need them for tomorrow, so the shop needs to be open on Saturday.

I know, I know, you are all wondering why we don't just make them ourselves. Well, the person cooking the dinner has insisted she would not be able to make them correctly, and will not change her mind no matter how much convincing I try to do. So the only option is to purchase them somewhere in advance, then quickly re-heat them.

    any thoughts would be appreciated!

It might be worth a call to Kaufman's (call ahead, they may not have them all the time).

For what it is worth, some of our relatives were raving about potato pancakes from Trader Joe's. We did not have any of the pancakes at our meal -- folks were just talking fondly of them in the abstract -- so I can't say personally how good TJ's potato pancakes are but boy, everyone liked them. They are on my shopping list.

Alternatively, the Red Apple restaurant on Milwaukee Ave. has a giant buffet with dozens of food items but they will give you a styrofoam clamshell carry-out container and you can take just the excellent homemade potato pancakes and pay for them by the pound. The little old Polish ladies in the kitchen that are cooking them fresh all day long will thank you! :-) (Just TRY to get in and out of there without sampling the rest of the buffet! ha!)

Of maybe you could make them yourself, and then reheat them at her place?

I took Joy's suggestion and went with the Red Apple. It was right on the way and it seemed like a lot of people had positive things to say about their potato pancakes.

The potato pancakes were great - not quite as good as making them from scratch fresh, but they held up well and re-crisped nicely before the meal. We got about 8-10 pancakes for around $5 - quite the deal. Plus it couldn't have been easier just walking in, grabbing a styrofoam box, and taken what we needed.

All the Jewish Delis on the North Shore make "poor" Latkes. I've tried all of them.

Sunset Foods, especially their Highland Park store are OK +. And reasonable. The smaller ones, and crispy are the choice.
The BEST, Mannys, 1141 Jefferson. Pricier than all the others, but worth it.
