I saw this get top marks on a recent ATK. While picking up orange juice at Mariano's I noticed they carried it so I figured I would try it.

At $2.99/lb it's pricey. I butterflied it and roasted it at 375 for 45 minutes. What a difference from the waterlogged birds! Dense flavorful meat and crispy skin. I can't get over how moist it was as well! I thought it might be dry due to no brining but the breast meat was perfect and that's from a die hard dark meat only fan.

A whole chicken was $12.50, about $5 more than the house brand. I tell you what, my taste buds are worth $2.50 any day.

Hi- If you live near a Treasure Island, they also carry it, and they frequently put it on sale. I don't know how often they put the whole chicken on sale, but they frequently put the chicken legs on sale for I believe $1.49. I don't buy a lot of chicken, but when I do, I never buy any of the factory farmed chicken such as Tyson. Sanderson's Farm's chicken is supposed to be naturally raised, but I highly suspect it is also factory farmed.. Thanks, Nancy

The basic Whole Foods chicken is also air-chilled and is (I believe) also $2.99/lb. It is also very good.

Edited: Subbed chicken for turkey. WF offers air-chilled chickens. No idea about turkeys.

Tecumsuh Farm's "Smart Chicken" is widely available in the midwest in regular and organic. Unfortunately, they are not fresh.

Hy-Vee sells these under their house brand - these are fresh.

I'll definitely check out TI. Wilmette is the easiest to get to.

But if you want to be sure to get the whole line of Bell and Evans chicken products at Treasure Islands Wilmette, go there on a Saturday morning. During the week most items are sold out. They get their new shipment on Friday night.

I am glad I read this. I recall in my young years going to shop with my grandma and chicken was whitish pink and it was dry not a soggy mess like what we get today. I will look for this chicken.

Plum Market has Bell & Evans - if you are in their loyalty program they often have coupons for 25% off all meats.
