Bulk Pecans

I need some suggestions on where to get a bunch of cheap bulk Pecans.

Now that Ricci has closed, it is tough. But for shelled raw halves, I've found that Costco is pretty reliable. They sell them in 2-pound bags, iirc. I've never had a problem with their quality and obviously the price is decent. They're not the best but they're pretty good and consistently so.

Wouldn't i have to have a Costco card to shop there? Ive literally never stepped foot into a Costco.

Yes. Membership is needed.

I ordered them online earlier this evening. Google Express will deliver so I don't have to step into Costco either. That said they ask for your membership # when you order online.

if you plan to keep buying nuts, it's worth joining costco. as ronnie says, they're good, consistent quality. otherwise, go up to the indian stores on devon, or al khayam, or andy's fruit ranch on kedzie, just south of lawrence. also i was just in rich's deli on western at iowa the other day and noticed good nut prices. not wholesale quantities, but you didnt say how much you needed.

Not that it is a totally useful comment for this situation. I was advised in southern Illinois you can buy bulk pecans in the shell (or maybe out?) from locals who harvest their trees. It is useful to know if you happen to travel down state south of Springfield.

An alternative to obtaining a Costco membership: Ask a friend who has a Costco card to take you along and purchase it with them. Since they have photo images on the back, you cannot just borrow their card and go.

You may be able to get them at Superior Nut and Candy's warehouse store in the old Stockyards, around 40th and Racine. I haven't been myself, but definitely worth a phone call, at least.

I'd also recommend Costco. I just made two Thanksgiving pecan pies, and assumed that Aldi would be at least on the lower end of "in-line" for pecan prices. Few days later I was walking through Costco and although I do not currently remember the price of their big bag of halves, I do remember that it was very much better than the Aldi price per lb. I do think that if you have a friend who has a Costco membership, if they buy you a gift card, you can go shop there without a membership. So if you were to hand someone the cash to purchase a gift card for you, you can go there and use it without needing a membership.

Fresh Farms sells them in bulk, depending on the quantity you are looking for. I'd also recommend checking the tree Ripe citrus thread. They sell beautiful shelled pecans in season. Probably not for the best price, but far and away the best quality.

Google Express delivered pecans and more from Costco a moment ago.

The pecans look great. The cost was $11.99 for the 2 lb bag.

No 1-day passes. They will, however, refund your membership if you change your mind. There are periodic deals on the web that offer coupons, etc., for Costco merchandise that effectively drops the membership to zero.

As for the photos on the membership cards, they rarely look (my wife uses mine all the time because she's forever misplacing hers and they never ask for details).

For future, they had pecans on the peach truck when it was here over the summer.

Let me know how that works out! I also live nearby, but the hours are a bit tough for me--though I might try to get out a bit early if it's worth it. If you have any details on the other kinds of things they have, I'd be most curious. Heard they have lots of candies and whatnot as well.

When I was in Austin back in October, we bought a humble baggie of shelled pecans from a roadside market (in Luling, actually) and they were spectacular -- leaps and bounds better than any I've ever had before. I'm still kicking myself for not buying a few bags to bring home. I guess Texas isn't totally useless.

Well I gotta say the pictures certainly look nice, and the prices seem comparable. Where do you get the candied fruits so necessary for fruitcakes? I've always gone to the Home Economist store on Cass Ave. just south of 63rd Street in Westmont.
It's changed it's name but still has the original sign up. The sort-of new one just has one very poor review, so
maybe I need another source for candied fruits.

Ideas?

And Tree-Ripe will be at the Menards on Clybourn this Saturday morning. As Stevez noted upthread their quality can't be beat but, in the "you get what you pay for" department, at $12/lb shelled that's double the price of Costco so IMO not in the wheelhouse of someone wanting to buy in bulk.
