I'm making a recipe a Texan friend sent to me for Thanksgiving. The recipe is put out by the beloved Texas grocery store, HEB, and calls for pre-made horchata; the recipe specifies a brand, Kern's, that I don't think is available here in Chicago. Can anyone recommend another brand? I'm willing to make pie crust from scratch instead of the Texas-based brand they mention, but I don't think I can add making horchata from scratch to my busy to do list this week.

Or am I wrong and they do sell Kern's around here?

Rice Dream, the rice milk company sells a packaged, shelf stable horchata. Used to be widely available but a little harder to find now. They have a product locator online.

Kern's comes up on a Google search as available at Walmart.

Doesn't look like it's sold at any of the Chicagoland locations.

Plan B - If you're near a Taco & Burrito King, or any reasonably "authentic" Mexican take-out place you can get a horchata to go. May vary in authenticity and sweetness, but it's convenient.

This is definitely what I'd recommend, too. I wouldn't even consider a grocery store version unless I had irrational fears about procuring the genuine article. In Chicagoland, there are hundreds of viable options, if not more. Once you taste what you get, you can adjust your final recipe accordingly.
