Looking for buttercrust bread from a bakery

Post #1 - December 10th, 2018, 11:17 pmGrowing up it was a treat to buy buttercrust bread from the local bakery. The bakery is no more and buttercrust from the supermarket bakeries has been different from the local bakery version and disappointing. Does anyone have a suggestion for where to buy great buttercrust bread, ideally on the NW side (we are in Portage Park) or could be North suburbs along the Edens up to Highland Park?

Sunset Foods has a buttercrust white which I presume is either baked in-house or baked for them. It's very good, though not spectacular. We get one every now and then at the Highland Park store but I'm guessing they carry it at all their locations. They do tend to sell out of it from time to time, so it might be best to call before making a special trip.

I was just looking up buttercrust bread to learn melted butter is poured on top just before going into the oven.
In the past, I have made bread. Once it was out of the oven and tin, I took a stick of butter to melt and cover the entire loaf. It did soften the crust somewhat, though we liked it buttery.
Worse comes to worse, there are plenty of recipes out there for buttercrust bread.

Post #5 - December 11th, 2018, 2:32 pmTag's Bakery in Evanston also produces a Buttercrust white bread. I remember enjoying it but it's been a few years since I last had one.
