Mexican grocery on the north shore?

What are some good Mexican groceries in the north suburbs? It would be especially good if they had a good meat department and made their own chorizo.

Not on the North Shore, but whenever I need good Mexican grocery with a great meat department I go to

Excellent homemade chorizo, produce, and a sit down tacoria.

I think Jimenez fits the bill. It's just fine.

Closer to the shore, I'm curious about La Union Supermarket in Highwood. Their website infers that they make their own chorizo . . .

Choizo (sic) – Mexican “spicy” sausage, made fresh with our own blend of lean pork and chili spices.

They also have a taqueria. There's a dedicated thread here but I'm curious if anyone has been lately.

Just south of La Union is:

Isaac & Moishe Deli, Fruits & Vegetables
311 Waukegan Ave · Highwood, IL 60035 · (847) 433-0557

They do have a place to sit down to eat tacos or deli sandwiches. While La Union offers cooked food, it is intended you go elsewhere to eat.

Isaac & Moishe are Jewish Mexicans. You will not find pork products or shrimp on the menu or in the store. If they make their own chorizo, it will be beef-based. If you are going to La Union, you should acquaint yourself with Isaac and Moishe, too.

Do they still have a full meat counter at I&M? They call themselves a deli and their website was ambiguous.

I was there a few months ago, there was a full meat counter. Their website is definitely not informative.

If anyone were to visit La Union, it makes sense to visit and check out Moishe and Isaac, too.

When I lived up there, I always felt I&M was more of a deli, than a grocery and felt La Unica was a grocery. I wasn't even aware that La Unica had a taqueria.

We didn't frequent I&M, but would occasionally stop at La Unica if cooking Mexican for some staples.

I will stop by both La Union and Moishe & Isaac this week to find out what is going on presently. I consider both grocery stores with Moishe & Isaac having a seating for eating. La Union is pretty tights, I cannot imagine eating there, though they do a have tacos and other prepared foods to take-out.

Finally made it to Carnicerias Jimenez. Nice place. I got the house made chorizo and liked it quite a bit. You can clearly get any Mexican ingredients you're looking for, including meat, fish, deli and bakery. I'll surely go back to try the in store taqueria.

I checked out both La Union and Moishe and Isaac to round out my search for a local Mexican grocery. Both were comparable. Both had a meat counter (although Moishe and Isaac didn't have house made chorizo, at least when I was there), both had modest selections of produce, dried peppers and Mexican dairy products.

Neither, however, had close to the selection, both in quantity and quality, of Carnicerias Jimenez. Given that by Google, Carnicerias Jimenez is 21 minutes away, and the Highwood places are 17 minutes, Carnicerias Jimenez is now my go to place when I need Mexican groceries.
