Not sure if it is still Jewel policy, but >10 years ago the policy at Jewel was that if an item scanned incorrectly at the register you'd get it for free.
Now, let's say that this happened to a friend of yours and his wife on multiple occasions, for the same products. Let's say that your friends were thinking of going in, repeatedly, and buying these same products over and over and in greater and greater quantities, knowing that they would scan wrong and they'd get them for free. What would you think about that?

Yes you used to get the item for free, but they eliminated that option at least three years ago. If you shop at a store in Evanston though, there is a city ordinance that says they have to give you the item for free, but if you buy ten cans of chili, and they ring up the wrong price, you only get the first can for free. I know there are people that used to buy the item that scanned the wrong price and turn around and buy it again, but I consider that unethical. I also consider it unethical to go to Jewel for the word of the day, and go through the line more than once so you can get it for free multiple times. Then when I go into the store in the evening, they are out of the free item. At least with the Saturday Sampler you are only allowed one free item per telephone number, although I could see people going through the line twice, and entering in a different telephone number the second time.

Probably at least 75% of the WOD and Saturday samplers I pass on. I won't make a special trip to the store just to get a freebie, and most of the time, the item they are giving away for free has little nutritional value, and no my local food pantry will not take junk food donations such as pop or candy bars. Hope this helps, Nancy
