Since I found out that Chicagoans can purchase Mexican 7-up in the U.S., I wondered if anyone has ever seen these:

    Veronas cookies by Gamesa.

The cookies are just regular round crumbly cookie type outside and filled with gooey chocolate inside. They sometimes come in a chocolate/cookie swirl outside with gooey chocolate inside. They are about 2" across and come 3 to an individual package. There are about 6 or so packs of 3 in a box.

The second item is a candy called:

    Choco-retas made by Ricolino.

They are small pea sized candies that have a crunchy (like M & M's) lime green outside coating and chocolate mint inside. They come in 45 gram small bags or sometimes larger. They remind us of mint chocolate M & M's, but better, if that makes any sense.

It's another item we crave when we return from Mexico. Anyone ever seen them anywhere?

Well, I don't know, but there's a small chain of Mexican candy shops named Dulcelandia in the Chicago area. If anyone is going to have them, it's them.

It's been mentioned a few times around here, and it's a pretty easy thing to search for, so check it out.

joby, the Gamesa brand of cookies can be found in every Mexican supermarket I've visited here in Chicago. I must admit that I don't know if that particular style of cookie is available, but I'd say it's very likely.

If your plans still include a trip down to the Pilsen neighborhood, try La Casa del Pueblo supermarket on Blue Island just south of 18th Street. Or, there are sure to be some Mexican supermarkets up near the Loyola area, where you are staying. Maybe some posters from that part of the city can recommend one or two.

Supermercado Morelia carries a whole bunch of Gamesa products. I know there is a chocolate cookie like you describe in the variety packs. The next time I am there, I will look for them and the candy. My latest obssession from there is a cookie called Mamut (mammoth). They are chocolate covered marshmallow sandwiches, like mini-Moon Pies.

Thanks Amata and d4v3. We love some of the cookies we found in Mexico. It's fun to try things that we can't find here at home. We also liked the cajeta type candies.

If you do see some of the Veronas cookies, I would appreciate it if you would post.

gleam, I emailed dulcelandia to see if they carried the cookies or candies. Neither were available on their website. Thanks for the tip.
