My step-father was serbian and we had yearly lamb roasts at my uncle's home when I was very young. The lamb was cooked outdoors on a spit, basted in beer, and we took slices of a dense bread called Pogoca (sp?) and rubbed it on the lamb to get the grease on the bread. It was delicious. Does anyone know where I can find this bread. It would be great for sandwiches and so many other recipes. It's different than the balkan bread I've seen referenced on this site.

    Rudy,

When it rains, it pours. I am fairly certain this is what you are looking for:

Since everyone claims Pogaca is best fresh from the oven, then this recipe might be usefull.

If you want to travel to Lansing, then the Serbian Social Center offers this bread to be eat on the premises or take out.

The bread pictured above came from a Bosnian bakery who referred to it as Bosnian pita. However this bread, like roasted spit lamb and cevapcici cross a lot of ethnic borders in the region formerly known as Yugoslavia and beyond. There have been a few cevapcici surveys where you will see your bread with just another name.

Do let us know which location had the bread which most reminded you of your memories.

    Cathy2,

I'm actually grew up in Lansing and my 10th high school reunion was at the Serbian Social Center. I had completely forgotten about it. Thanks so much! Next time I visit my mother, I'm there!
