I work with a teenager in Chicago. He's interested in getting a degree in culinary arts and then working as a chef in Chicagoland.

Without going into specifics, let me just say that this teenager has not had an easy ride and does not have frequent contact with many employed, professional people.

I'm looking for a chef or other culinary professional who'd be willing to show us around a kitchen and answer a few questions. This wouldn't need to be a long visit--just a chance to see a professional kitchen in action.

If you'd be willing to help out or if you know of an organization that might be helpful, email me (mhj@uchicago.edu) or respond to this thread.

    Thanks!

    Hi Matt!

I am the GM of a sushi restaurant in Uptown. I also am the kitchen (not sushi) cook one day a week.

I'd be happy to take you and your friend around the kitchen and answer any questions you may have. I have 19 years in the business and I absolutely love the industry.

    Hope this helps!

    Best,
    Jeannine

I don't know if this is helpful, but I work a lot with underserved kids and homeless people. There is a place on Broadway and Wilson which offers a culinary certificate. I'm not sure how long the program is, but they do have job placement. I would be glad to help if I can from my end with some of my social service connections. I know there is no fee for this program.

The program is at inspiration corporation. Here is their link: http://www.inspirationcorp.org/

I think you can just call them and tell them you are interested in their culinary arts program. If they need a letter or something from a social service agency for a referral, I would be glad to help. :)
