I was asked by some British folks I will be hosting in Chicago if there are any local celebrations of Guy Fawkes night. I had never heard of this holiday before, but did some research. Apparently in 1605, Guy Fawkes was part of an English Catholic plot to blow up Parliament. The plot was foiled, Guy was the scapegoat, and ever since he has been burned in effigy every November 5 in bonfires across England. Here's a good web site if you're curious: www.bonefire.org

I would be surprised if there are any Chicago celebrations of Guy Fawkes Day, but if anybody knows of something I'd be glad to hear about it.

A big city like Chicago is home to many ex-pats and, of course, the English are famous or infamous for exhibiting their culture abroad and sharing it with the natives...so don't be too surprised to find at least one celebration open to the public.

I would try stopping in for a beer at the Red Lion Pub and asking one of the patrons or staff.

You might also search for British Pubs in Chicago and check their event schedules. On a quick search I found a car club that has an actual bonfire, but it may be for members only, so I won't post the details.
