    I want some!
I am actually going to SF this week, so I will get to have some.. but why is nobody else in Chicago doing this? I know about Penguin (RIP) but nobody else? I have no money, otherwise I would open a store like it myself. The closest we have are the Chili flavored Paletas in the park (which I really do love...)

I believe that San Francisco has a high concentration of knowledgeable food enthusiasts that can appreciate a place like this. BTW, the owner critiques ice cream makers in the newest Dwell Magazine. I guess it's a matter of more "foodies" per square mile that are willing to support places like Humphry Slocome.

While here in Chicago we tend put our efforts into posting about McDonald's new crappy burger 70+ times within a four day period. Que sera...

Perhaps you can tell us a little about their product.

I prefer to think of it this way: here in Chicago, we understand that spirited conversation is a great accompaniment to good food. And that we're down-to-earth & open-minded enough that we can debate fast food cheeseburgers, country pâté, Italian beef, and artisan cheeses, all with equal aplomb.

Anyhoo, the only place I can think of that's even vaguely similar is Bobtail Ice Cream Company. However, they only have a few "unique" ice cream flavors (the merlot w/ dark chocolate chips is quite popular, and the Dutch cocoa w/ Jack Daniels sounds tasty enough).

This thread (aptly titled "Ice Cream List") discusses Bobtail & many other ice cream options in & around Chicago.

While Bobtail has some interesting flavor names, I think their ice creams severely lack flavor. I've never had a flavor there that I'd go back for.

I've been favorably impressed by the Capannari in Mt. Prospect., which you might enjoy, emdub. One of the things I like most about them is the wide variety of mint flavors (there were at least four different types on my last visit). Their ice cream is quite flavorful and has an excellent texture.

They have flavors like "Chocolate Chili", "Lavender Honey", "Irish Coffee", "Coconut Curry", "Limoncello Sorbet", etc. Which might appeal to you if you like the gourmet stuff at Humphry Slocome, but they also have plenty of classic fruit and nut flavors. Call ahead if there's a specific flavor you're interested in.

    They're a small-batch, family-owned operation in a historic building. Worth a visit.

    Best,
    Michael

Cool- thanks for the Mt Prospect recommendation. I will check it out and try to convince them to take over the Cold Stone Creamery in Lincoln Square that keeps closing then opening again. I hate Cold Stone. It all tastes the same. They would make a killing if they moved to the city, I don't know much about Mt Prospect but it's not the first place that comes to mind when I think "foodie".

And I will report back to you on Humprhye Slocombe.
