    Do Your Bit for Breasts

Chicken breasts are the tofu of the meat world: only as interesting as the sauce you cook them in.

Stamps, too, are often boring, and I will always wait in line to buy stamps that have interesting art or that commemorate some great man or woman or that raise money for a good cause, to wit: human breasts.

The US Postal Service recently released its new "Fund the Cure" stamp to help fund breast cancer research.

Instead of the routine 37 cents for a stamp, this one cost 40 cents. The additional 3 cents will go to breast cancer research. A "normal" book costs $7.40. This one is only $8.00. If all stamps are sold, it will raise an additional $35,000,000 for this vital research.

When I first heard about this, I vetted the info to ensure that I was not dealing with a hoax: it's for real .

    Hammond,

All true, and a worthy cause, but the info is slightly out of date. The USPS has been doing this since '98, has raised $37,000,000.00 to date.

Current Breast Cancer Research stamps are .45c or $9 for a book of 20-stamps.

USPS info can be found Here

    Enjoy,

    Gary,

My understanding is that this is a new stamp, re-issued in a campaign that has been for a while.

I did send a link to this thread to the cancer volunteer/friend who emailed me about this stamp; perhaps she will chime in.

Thanks for keeping us abrest of this worthy cause. Next time I'm at the Post Office I'll be sure to do my part to stamp out breast cancer in our lifetime.

Semi-postal stamps (postage + a contribution) are issued by a number of countries to fund specific purposes. The US did not offer semi postals until 2001 when they offered the semi-postal in the aftermath of 9-11. Many nations in Europe offered them for post-war relief and for tuberculosis among other things.

Personally, I do not like the US versions as they generally do not include the denomination on the face of the stamp (i.e., 0.37+0.03). Some people use the stamps as 1st Class 1-oz postage which is proper. Others use it as a 0.40 stamp. I think that a lot of people are not clear as to how they should be used.
