Amen. The fast is over and we can eat, but Barnum and Bagel--and Sam and Hy's--are still dead and gone.

What's Cooking (Greek-owned) was closed yesterday. The Bagel (Jewish-owned) also closed. NY Bagel (not certain of parentage) on North and Sheffield was open. Didn't check Steve's. I assume Manny's and Ashkenaz were closed.
See, I'm an idea man, Chuck. I got ideas coming at me all day. Hey, I got it! Take LIVE tuna fish and FEED 'em mayonnaise!

Manny's was indeed closed. Someone was there to pick up the phone, but that person broke the bad news to me.

My family owned Friedman's Deli on Western and Devon until 1975 then they scattered and went to work for Sam & Hys and Kaufmans before retiring. They were open 24/7 except for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. One year they had trouble closing they couldn't find the key. This brought back many a memory.

Nice piece in today's New York Times about "Save the Deli" blogger David Sax's new book on disappearing Jewish delis.
