They have started recalling eggs. I wonder how this will affect the breakfast restaurants. Please let me know next time you're out for breakfast...

I'm guessing they change suppliers (assuming the suppliers haven't already changed suppliers) if they used those eggs in the first place. The affected eggs are about 1% of the US supply, so I'd be really surprised if it mattered - in any case, it hasn't made any changes in my eating (had some lovely eggs at M. Henry yesterday). The companies they supply appear to be the low-end store brands.

Call me crazy, but don't you eliminate the salmonella just by cooking the eggs?

While thorough cooking will likely kill the bacteria, the problem starts with handling. Salmonella can live on the shells as well as inside the egg (and cross-contamination can occur if there's breakage in shipping). So you can pass it on from cracking an egg and not thoroughly cleaning your hands or surfaces before touching other foods.

Also, you need "thorough" cooking - no runny yolks, no loose-set anything. And there are always the numbskulls who do a Rocky-style raw egg protein shake in the morning.

I ordered eggs Benedict yesterday. I am still alive.

And Costco. My MiL actually got a phone call from Costco alerting her of the recall of the Hillandale eggs that she bought from them.

Crappy eggs, but good customer service.

One site said a half-billion eggs to be recalled. Can you imagine an omelette that size? It'd probably be bigger than Lake Michigan!

Yes. Great advice. I just talked to my doctor friend who told me the same thing. No more runny eggs for me until this is over.

Do you smoke cigarettes or drive around without a seatbelt, or drink too much all the time, or not floss?

Just wondering where on the scale of not eating your eggs they way you normally have them, this might fall.......

There's a very easy solution: don't eat eggs from that supplier.
