In addition to all his other stellar qualities, neurologist Oliver Sacks has exquisite foodie tastes. When asked 'what is your favorite brain food?' he responded:

It has been said that fish is brain food, and I love fish, especially herring. The best is the fresh new catch from Holland that comes in the late spring. The Dutch celebrate this occasion with herring festivals, and my friends at Russ and Daughters throw a big party in New York with dozens of different herrings.

When I ponder a return trip to New York, Russ & Daughters is high on my list.

The julbord at Tre Kroner featured 9 or so house-prepared herring. I had seconds. Could have eaten more.

They may but that's not dutch nor do I believe its in Holland.

In New York, in addition to Russ & Daughter's, you can get fresh nieuw haring at the Grand Central Oyster Bar.

I do love nieuw haring! That is, ik hou van nieuwe haring. (That's dutch!) :-)

Found it! Kruse's is on Schönberger-Strand, in Schönberg, just north of Keil. Certainly a proper place for a Fisch-Imbiss!

Wouldn't a bit of smoked fisch go good right now?

As I thought; its German. (Dutch folks take some issue with confusion with the German language...totally different)

I'm fluent in German, but when I hear Dutch it's almost like I was hearing English with an odd accent; then I think, "jeez, if he'd speak a little louder, maybe I'd understand." Fat chance!

    Can you understand Friesian?

A bit; my grandmother was from Friesland.
