We were dining al fresco in Canada and as the food was served mass quantities of wasps swarmed our table. The waitress took 3 paper bags (lunch sized) and blew them up and put one on our table and two on the wall nearby. Within 1-2 minutes the wasps flew away. The theory behind this miracle is that they buggers think that the bags are hives! We were skeptical until we saw it!

Okay here is another unbelievable but true flying pest remedy. I was in a Kenosha, WI bakery last month and noticed a few small ziplock bags filled with water and a few shiny pennies hanging from the ceiling. I asked about it and they said it detracts flies. They swore it worked. Anyone heard of this before?

I've actually heard of the plastic bag/ water one but didn't know it included loose change. Never tried it.

I'm actually intrigued by the paper bag one, btw.

    Hi,

I have heard people suspending hot dogs from bushes on the perimeters of open tent dining parties. The idea was to distract the yellow jackets away from the event.

Might distract some of the attendees as well....

A long-time mystery solved. Note the baggie filled with water and pennies hanging under the Italian sausage sign. I had no idea what it was there for.

That's a picture taken in 2008 at Robo's Hot Tamales on Highway 61 south of Memphis. In addition to hot tamales, Robo's specializes in Chicago-style sandwiches including a Polish sausage going by its old-time name. I had lots of questions for them but Robo's wasn't open when we stopped.

Here's what Snopes has to say about water-filled baggies.

I'd also never come across this until seeing it at Sam's BBQ down in Austin a few years ago.

It works like a chahm though !
