Hello Everyone - I'm posting on non-food, as my message is not directly regarding food. I'm looking for support for preservation of a neighborhood specifically. I've lived on the north side of Chicago since I moved here 12yrs ago. I've worked and spent a lot of social time in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. I've always enjoyed some of the more quaint spots such as the bourgois pig coffeehouse, the now closed piccolo mondo, my first "authentic" ;) mexican food experience at taco burrito #whatever, blues music at kingston mines and b.l.u.e.s. on halsted, and the list goes on.

I also worked at the Arlington House, an international hostel located at 616 W. Arlington near clark and fullerton. The building is a beautiful 4 story structure that was built in the 1920's by the Eleanor Women's Foundation as the Eleanor Lodge, a place for women who moved to the city alone to live and gather socially and to assist in developing their independence. I recently learned that developers want to tear down this sound structure and build new condos (8 $2.5 mil units).

I'm currently working in tandem with Preservation Chicago to try to preserve this building, to keep it from being yet another architectural casualty in this city. I'm hoping some of you LTH posters might live in this neighborhood (43rd ward) and might be interested in listing your names in support of the preservation of the Arlington House.

If so, please e-mail me at patootie@hotmail.com. And thanks in advance for any support

    Ciao
    Sharon

    Sharon,

I spent the better part of 30 years living on the next block over, Deming Place. I'm sorry to hear about the further raping of this once quaint neighborhood. Is this the building that houses Salvatore's?

No, it's been a youth hostel for about 10 years, about a block 1/2 west of Salvatore's. Wonderful, huge solid structure.

When my wife-to-be and I were first dating, she lived in the 500 block of Arlington. We liked the area very much and do recall Arlington House. The street was, and is, a handsome area which would not benefit from one more pedestrian condo development.

I certainly hope Arlington House survives in its present form.

By the way, last month we noted a condo conversion nearby (I think it's on the south side of Arlington near Geneva Terrace) which has sold only one unit. They've been on the market for many moons.

LTH - your special event advice greatly appreciated:

I'm looking for a place in or very near Lincoln Park (walkable from Fullerton and Southport a great bonus but not a necessity) with a private or semi-private room (or private party rent-out) for 30 people at 9ish on a Friday night in May. Moderate Asian (Thai?), gastropub, or pizza / bar food would be great. Previous successes with this group in a similar location have included downstairs at PS Bangkok, Paramount Room, and upstairs at Hopleaf (long ago). BYOB would be fine, or decent beer list but all ages welcome.

Goose Island is looking possible at the moment - they allow "easily identifiable" underage guests, have parking, and have pretty reasonable buffet packages. Any large group experiences there? Other recs? Many thanks!

It's been 4 years since I planned something like this, but Babareeba always did a great job, with reasonably priced food and bev packages.

How about the upstairs at Pequod's?

I would just second the comment that Babareeba has a good record on dealing with this sort of thing. I've been at about 3 special events in little sequestered nooks there, and they all came off very well.
