I thought others would get a kick out of the fact that the required “synthesis” essay on this year’s Advanced Placement
English Language and Composition exam is on locavorism. The exam was administered yesterday. My informant—my son—said that the students had to write about the choices a community might make about locavore shopping and eating. He enjoyed the sources and the essay, but this is my son the
Charlie-Trotter’s fan who wrote his senior paper in this very AP course on why American students should be exposed to fine dining as French students are (and as Trotter tries to do with his foundation).
It could be argued that the AP exam—at least in English and history—is a bit of a cultural barometer, so it’s interesting that the locavore issue has made its appearance on an exam.
