I just took a look at the Serious Eats City Guide: Chicago - which was posted on 9/11/08. http://www.seriouseats.com/2008/09/seri ... icago.html

I was surprised to see that Nagrant (who I am pretty sure has disclosed many times that he is on this forum as "MJN" and who I'd like to hear from on this) had this to say about best bar food in chicago.

    Best Bar Food
Though this will likely change with the opening of The Publican and The Bristol, the duck pastrami reuben and Belgian steamed mussels and frites at Hopleaf are the way to go. The Publican: 845 West Fulton Market, Chicago IL 6067 (map); The Bristol: 2152 North Damen Avenue, Chicago IL 60647 (map); 773-862-5555. Hopleaf Bar: 5148 North Clark Street, Chicago IL 60640 (map); 773-334-9851.

While I agree, that the hopleaf is awesome and I agree that I look forward to the opening of both the Publican and The Bristol with bated breath....is there something wrong with this? To name a potential winner in this category before it has even opened? thoughts? anyone?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post on this....maybe better suited for culinary chit chat?

No need to apologize, I think you're probably right, since your inquiry seems more geared toward the coverage aspect than the food itself (which of course no one has tried in two of the three restaurants mentioned).

I had seen the comment you point out, by the way, but it didn't bother me much. I didn't think he was really putting the cart before the horse, just recognizing the impending arrival of a couple establishments rather consciously interested in raising the bar food bar, as it were.

    Cheers,

    Aaron

Serious Eats Chicago will launch on November 14. Details here.

I enjoy SE and hope that a dedicated Chicago page means more great content.

Great news and great to learn that Nick Kindelsperger, formerly of Grub Street, will be heading it up.
