It should come as no surprise that Takeru Kobayashi won the event for the fifth straight year. He "only" finished off 49 dogs (in 12 minutes) this year, so he didn't beat his own world record of 53. Second place was taken by Sonya Thomas, "The Black Widow", who downed 37.

Thomas and Kobayashi have a combined weight of about 250lbs.

Oh, and apparently she holds the following world record:

    - June 19, 2004, Chicago, Illinois, Bacci World Pizza-Eating Championship: 6 1/2 extra large "slices" of 24" Cheese Pizza in 15 minutes.

Which is worse: Nathan's or Bacci?

I caught the broadcast of this "event" on ESPN. It was laugh out loud funny. They covered it as if it were a real sporting event, complete with up `close and personal profiles of many of the competitors. The funniest line of the day was when one of the play-by-play men, when commenting on a participant's impending need to barf said, "Oh no, he's come so close, he doesn't want a reversal at this stage of the competition!" Reversal??? Now there's a new euphamism.

If I were to line up all the hot dogs I've stuffed my face with from end-to-end it would reach all the way from Chicago to the counter of Nathan's in New York and back.

The best way to describe them (IMO) as having a very strong garlic and CORN flavor. Absolutely horrible. I once offered a "I'll try any food once" friend $100 if he could digest just one of these things. He took one bite and said "I always wondered what dog food tastes like"

As for Bacci, I had one of their pizza's from the Archer Ave. store a few years ago. Nothing special. I can name half a dozen other places on the SW Side that have a similar tasting pizza.

Worst. Video effects. Ever. Eater X beat Sonya Thomas? Wow.

I have pics of Pat Bertoletti's jalapeño win last week in Plaza Garibaldi. I guess it used to be some sort of prison yard because it is completely enclosed by a fence with barbed wire on top, and there is only one gate. After fighting our way in, we watched Pat down 191 jalapeños (actually 200 but he was penalized 9 jalapeños) in 6.5 minutes, then left as soon as it was over.

    Hi,

What generated the nine jalapeno penalty?

Well I had my first Nathan dog on Coney Island when I was nine or ten. And whole fried soft shell crab on a bun. And 15c a slice NY Pizza. And 10c knishes on the beach mixed with sand.

Nathan's hot dogs w/ny mustard is heaven on a bun.

    Take that Oscar Meyer.

I would agree when your universe is Nathan's and Oscar Meyer, but try as I might, I just can't seem to enjoy a Nathan's hot dog the same way I do a good old Vienna. I keep trying them, though. I never seem to learn.

Man wins dumpling eating contest, then dies

Ivan Mendel ate 10 dumplings in half a minute to win first place and a one-liter jar of sour cream in the contest held in the town of Tokmak in the southeastern Zaporizhya region on September 18, Fakty I Kommentarii newspaper said.

Shortly afterwards, Mendel became unwell and died, according to local news websites.

These dumplings are not very big. I can eat that quantity easily. Perhaps there is a typo in the quantity stated. I hope that was really some terrific sour cream.

Can they be pierogi sized? If they are, and stuffed with something like potato, I could see 10 in 30 seconds being a reasonable feat. My cousin won this year's Polish fest pierogi eating contest at Toyota Park, and all it took was 30 potato-stuffed pierogi in five minutes. Only one other person got close to that amount.

    HI,

Pierogi sized would make much more sense. Ten in rapid succession could be a bit much. I guess I was thinking Pelmeni sized.

What did your cousin win for his efforts?

I tried my first Nathans dog a couple of months ago and am amazed what people see in that weiner. It is totally devoid of flavor when compared with Vienna.I think we are getting far too many expatriot New Yorkers in Chicago and wish they would take their overrated Nathens dogs and Boarshead meats back with them.
Chicago has some of the greatest and most underated sausage makers in the U.S. and Boarshead still gets a foothold here.
Try Daisy brand sausage meats from Crawford sausage company.Compare their hot dogs or Prasky with any meats from New Yuk and give me your opinion.
If New Yuk has anything over Chicago its because they know how to market their products.

A big trophy, a red hat, and bragging rights. (No cash prizes.) Apparently, the Illinois record was somewhere in the low 50s. I certainly would have guessed it being a good amount higher.

Very impressive. While Pat Bertoletti estimates he can eat 100 hard boiled eggs in an hour, far behind the Kobayashi pace, here he takes down 50 raw eggs in 10 seconds. Not for the faint of heart...
