Can the Jewish Deli be Reformed? describes innovative takes on Jewish deli offerings in several cities. Why is nothing happening on this front here in Chicago?

Saul's in Berkeley has been around for a long time. I used to live a few blocks from it. I'm not sure using Niman Ranch meat makes it all that innovative. Zingerman's is a bit of an empire now. I think the only thing stopping it from happening in Chicago is that no one has done it yet. I don't think there are any particular barriers that exist here but not in other places.

Because Ken Gordon has refused my numerous bribes to relocate. Next up: 50-year pu-erh and a bottle of Bushmills owned by Daley I.

Yes it has. Good chicken liver sandwiches, although my initial visit (in which I mispronounced "challah" and got a talking-to) kept me from going back for a long time.

I never really though of Saul's as a Jewish deli, though, it was more "Jew-ish" with its fancy-dan organic ingredients and such.
