See the piece for the sad news. Mark Caro, too. . .Mark's thoughts:

"'I loved writing The Foie Gras Wars for Simon & Schuster, and I’ve been itching to move forward on the next projects,” Caro said. “It’s too easy to kick long-term goals down the road when you’re working at a job that you love while also juggling family and other commitments. This is helping me take the necessary leap.'”

Actually Pang, Caro and in total more than 3 dozen are leaving . . .

Among those confirmed to be leaving the Tribune are Fred Mitchell, Colleen Mastony, Jon Hilkevitch, Maggie Gentilcore, Bob Secter, Barbara Brotman, Rich Wronski, Bonnie Miller Rubin, Stephan Benzkofer, Dawn Turner, Lisa Black, George Knue, Bill Hageman, John Owens and Kevin Pang.

On Friday, reporter Mark Caro, who has covered music, movies, entertainment and culture in his 26 years at the Tribune, also announced he had opted for a buyout. He said he plans to continue exploring the cultural world.

Now the Tribune only has Phil Vettel's mediocre restaurant reviews (sigh). I will Pang's hip, breezy, global and entertaining take on the Chicago food scene.

I compared the Trib's (Vettel) review of Green River to The Reader's (Mike Sula) -no comparison-Sula is a genius. Pang was really good on Cheap Eats and ethnic foods, food trucks, as well as neighborhood dining and trends. IMHO the wrong one was let go.

No one was let go. These are voluntary buyouts, as explained in the article.

Well, this is general corporate speak that's been around for many years. It's not like companies open the offers up to anyone. Offers are typically "suggested" to specific individuals with the understanding being that if the person does not accept the "offer," he/she is most likely going to be laid off but with a lesser package, thus making the offer appealing and explaining why it's usually accepted. From the company's perspective, it eliminates possible litigation.

Better yet, compare Vettel's dull and passionless praise of C Chicago to Jeff Ruby's brillant takedown, which was one of the most entertaining reviews that I've ever read.

I am a fan of Kevin Pang's writing. If I'm enjoying a food-related article in the Trib, I look at the byline and it's always Kevin's. I think he has a great future ahead, whatever his path.

If you haven’t read this yet, read it now. It is one of the longer pieces I’ve ever seen in the Trib, but worth every minute of your time. Pang brings passion to everything he writes. He handles this powerful story about Grace with grace.

Thanks Cathy2. I loved reading what Kevin Pang has learned in 11 years at the Trib. "His Saving Grace" was my favorite and I see it's his too.
He has some great lessons to share. I will follow him (and write him a thank you!).
