I attended a class at the restaurant show this week and they flew a chef over from Ecuador to promote their shrimp. We made an amazing ceviche with the shrimp, which were giving to us heads on. When peeling our shrimp, there was so much pigment in the shrimp our gloves turned a bright orangey color. They were sweeter than the normal shrimp I buy and they were very proud of their first class shrimp and that they applied best aquaculture practices. Also this industry there employs 180,000 Ecuadorians. At any rate, mission accomplished, I now what to seek these out. I keep reading that these are brought into the U.S. in great abundance, but when looking up my normal fish markets, I only see Gulf Shrimp from Mexico. Has anyone seen shrimp from Ecuador locally?

Here in far Upstate NY, this week I saw Peruvian shrimp advertised. Close, but not quite Ecuador.

Hi- They have had red shrimp from Argentina recently at both Jewel and Meijers. I am not sure if they still have it, or whether it was just for Lent. They had them on sale for $7.95 a pound at Jewel during Lent. I don't know how safe their shrimp is. Does anybody have any idea? Thanks, Nancy

They had red shrimp from Argentina last week at Trader Joes. They are frozen and wild caught. Supposedly around only in late spring. I have not tried them yet but plain to make shrimp scampi today with them.

Kudos to the AP for staying on top of this story. Long detailed article today is getting a lot of national and international coverage.

And I was *just* posting the link to the Trib coverage of the AP story on this! I've always tried to buy wild US shrimp for the better/known quality and the support of a US industry but the referenced slavery for shrimp production in the article is appalling. IMO the State Dept should be doing much more than hand wringing about this issue.

Katie wrote:Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I wasn't at all aware of this, but it adds to my list of reasons to avoid buying any kind of seafood from China or southeast Asia, for a variety of reasons, including those budrichard mentioned. When it comes to shrimp and crawfish in particular, I prefer to buy only products from the Gulf of Mexico and don't mind waiting until I find them.

Louisiana crawfish may have their issues too.

The AP's reporting on slavery in the Thai shrimping industry was awarded a prestigious George Polk award yesterday. The entire series can be seen here.

Dirk's Fish Market carries Gulf shrimp. I think they have both shell on and peeled & de-veined.

The AP won the big one today for its reporting on slavery in the Thai shrimping industry: the Pulitzer for Public Service.
