If you have any interest in seeing a (Wayang Kulit) Javanese Shadow
Puppet Play of stories from The Mahabarta with music provided by the
Chicago Friends of the Gamelan (of which I am a member) and other
musicians, please go to this site and follow the links to the Chicago
performance at the Cultural Center on Sunday, June 25th.

I hope to see you there. We get very few opportunities to perform a
Wayang Kulit since puppets and puppeteer are required. It should be a
great event - and it's free!

    Carolyn,

Sounds very interesting, thanks for posting the information. Will you be one of the Gamelan performers?

    Enjoy,

    Hi,

I will be alerting my Mom who will very likely be in the front row!

    Thanks for the alert!

I'm just a minor player, but I will indeed be performing in the Wayang Kulit with the Gamelan on June 25th at the Cultural Center.

It's funny...when I relate to The Wife the broad outlines of the political infighting, backbiting, backstabbing shenanigans one sometimes encounters on this site, she rolls her eyes as though to say, quite clearly, "You people are nuts."

So today, regarding this upcoming gamelan event, she shared with me how the dalang (puppeteer) is somehow angry with the bonang player, how the rebab player is not speaking with the bell person, and how the drummer (more old school, as far as I can tell) is getting testy with Pak Djhoko (kind of the guru of the event, a very kind, placid and all-accepting Javanese man, currently living in our basement and who understands the ways of the American gamelan player, like The Wife).

So to all of those who say "Get a life," I say, "This is it, bro." Getting along, not getting along, but generally playing together in a way that makes the final concert enjoyable. That, it seems to me, more or less, is life (I think).

    See you there.
