Indian state bans soft drinks after Coke, Pepsi gets toxic label

An Indian state has banned the sale of soft drinks as the country's highest court told the US beverage giants Pepsico and Coca-Cola to reveal the ingredients of their products.

    ...

"Manufacturers are required to print 'not only dangerous for human consumption, but also the quantity of the residues, if any, on each label,'" said spokesman K. Tiwari.

    ...

Federal MPs Thursday demanded a nationwide ban on Pepsi and Coke after the privately-funded Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) said 11 drinks sold by the two US companies contained unacceptable doses of pesticides.

    ...

The court reacted to a public lawsuit which argued products sold by both the firms were deeply laced with harmful chemicals such as phosphoric acid, caffeine and aspartame.

The ban is not general, limited to schools and governmental entities. So the consumer can still do what they want.

    Hi,

Thumbs Up and Limca are owned by Coca-Cola. In another political era in India, Coke and Pepsi were banned from selling in India. This allowed Indian producers to introduce Coke-like drinks like Thumbs Up. Now Coke and Pepsi are back with Coke buying the newbies. Thumbs up does have a cardamon taste, which an Indian would like. I wonder what the sales figures might really be on the Coke-Pepsi-Thumbs Up going toe to toe.

I talked to Coke/Pepsi marketing people at the Food show in May. Coke is well aware of the people bringing Mexican Coke here as well as importing drinks like Limca and Thumbs Up. They are considering offering these drinks focussed on ethnic populations. Of course not missing a beat I said Americans would also like a cane-sugar Coke, not just Mexicans!
