This is the flip side of What Restaurant does your Neighborhood Need?. A wonderful article from the New York Times about a man who buys a condo in Jackson Heights, Queens, for all the right reasons

    "Moving for the Food".

Just last night, pdaane said to me (regarding that thread), "those people need a new real estate agent." :)

But seriously, I've been tempted to post to that thread that there's absolutely nothing that my neighborhood needs. When choosing my home, access to food was a strong motivating factor.

If you live somewhere and lament about the culinary options available to you, at your next opportunity consider a move to the greater Albany Park/Irving Park neighborhood:

Top-notch Korean, excellent Mexican, South American, good sushi and sukiyaki, Ameri-Chinese, Chicago-style pizza (thin and thick), the best Middle-Eastern (Lebanese, Egyptian, Jordanian, bakeries, more...), diners, pubs, classic Chicago-Italian. And that's just within walking distance....

Take a 5-minute drive and you've got top-quality Thai, Neapolitan pizza, German, good Indian food, and the rest of Lincoln Square. Also, evon Ave. is a short jaunt.

The possibilities for a good meal near this area are vast and the shopping possibilities bring a ton of fantastic flavors into my home.

It's a neighborhood of plenty and I want for nothing. :)

    Best,
    Michael

I think that both my budget and my waistline BENEFIT from the lack of great food opportunities in McHenry Co. It forces me to stay at home and cook the balanced meals (in correct portion sizes).

But the neighborhood the article refers to does sound pretty good. (g)

We have turned down 2 major job opportunities that would have taken us out of state to areas without many food options. Any time I start doing a search when given these chances, I look at availibility of ethnic dining, places to buy food and good medical care before I think about housing or the job itself. It's pretty amazing how often you get out of a major metro area and the only grocery option is Wal-Mart.
