Stopped for a quick supper on the way home at Sol de Mexico. Carlos has an interesting Lenten menu--four or five non-meat entrees. A mushroom tamal almost got me, but decided on the scallops in mole amarillo. I have only had mole amarillo once, at Frontera, and it was a less than satisfying experience, so I decided to give it another go. A really great sauce, and excellent scallops, well-prepared. Nice heat to this mole, which was more siena than amarillo, but muy rico.
The mole was surpassed, however, by an item from the tapas menu shared as an appetizer--shrimp tacos (cannot remember how it was listed, broke my reading glasses earlier today and just managed to squint my way through the shrimp tacos part). Wow. Lightly fried shrimp then rolled and served as a classic taco dorado, in a pool of roasted tomato sauce and topped with a generous pile of pickled vegetables. Himself acquiesced to my choice, being a huge fan of the sopecitos at SdM (as am I, but he's a loyal kind of guy who finds something and sticks with it). He did raise an eyebrow at the pickled vegetables, but was converted at first bite. Happily, the tortillas for our entree arrived before we finished the tacos, and we were able to sop up the generous amount of sauce and shards of vegetables remaining.
Crepas con cajeta were offered as dessert and were excellent.
